WHAT DO A SUGAR BEET, A SOYBEAN, AND A MCDONALD’S FRENCH-FRY ALL HAVE IN COMMON? THEY ARE THE MOST COMMONLY SOLD, GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOODS IN TODAY’S MARKET. BY USING DNA FROM DIFFERENT TYPE/SPECIES OF FRUITS AND VEGETABLES, SCIENTISTS ARE ABLE TO ALTER THE GENES WITHIN PLANTS. THIS ENABLES THE PLANT TO THEN PRODUCE MORE FRUITS/VEGETABLES, CREATE A MORE TASTE-APPEALING FRUIT/VEGETABLE, AND ALSO FOR THE PLANT ITSELF TO GAIN THE ABILITY OF PEST-RESISTANCE. SINCE 1996, AGRIBUSINESS CORPORATIONS ALL OVER THE WORLD, AND SPECIFICALLY AMERICA HAVE BEEN USING THIS PROCESS TO FEED AN EVER LASTING AND GROWING POPULATION. NEVERTHELESS, DESPITE THE BENEFITS OF GMO’S, GMO’S NEED TO BE REMOVED FROM EVERYDAY AGRICULTURE DUE TO THE THREAT THEY POSE TO HUMAN HEALTH. FOR EXAMPLE, IN THE ARTICLE “FRIEND OR FOE” THE AUTHOR STATES THAT, “FOOD ALLERGIES IN CHILDREN INCREASED APPROXIMATELY 18% IN THE STUDIES THAT FOCUSED ON THE USE OF GMO’S (ALLISON 2012). THE HUGE JUMP IN THE FOOD ALLERGIES IN THE U.S IS A RESULT OF THE RECENT RADICAL CHANGE IN AMERICA’S DIET. GMO’S. THESE UNLABELED GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOODS CARRY A RISK OF TRIGGERING LIFE-THREATENING ALLERGIC REACTIONS TO ANYONE WHO CONSUMES THEM. NOW, EVIDENCE COLLECTED BY ANTI-GMO ORGANIZATIONS AND REPORTS SUGGEST THAT GMO’S ARE CONTRIBUTING TO EVEN HIGHER ALLERGY RATES IN THE FUTURE, PUTTING EVEN MORE PEOPLE AT THE RISK OF EXPERIENCING AN ALLERGIC REACTION. IN ADDITION TO THE ALLERGIC REACTIONS GMO’S CAUSE, IMPLEMENTATION OF GMO’S CAN ALSO RESULT IN NEW-BACTERIA GROWTH WITHIN A CROP THEREBY DEEMING IT HARMFUL TO EAT. FURTHERMORE, THERE ARE EVEN SOME GM FOODS THAT CONTAIN CARCINOGENS (CANCER CAUSING CHEMICALS) WITHIN THEM. ACCORDING TO THE “GO AGAINST GMO’S” ARTICLE, “ANIMAL RESEARCH POINTS TO SERIOUS HEALTH RISKS FROM EATING GM FOODS, INCLUDING INFERTILITY, IMMUNE SYSTEM PROBLEMS, GASTROINTESTINAL PROBLEMS, ORGAN CHANGES, TUMORS, AND CANCER.” EVEN AFTER THE FDA HAS TESTED GMO’S FOR SAFETY, THERE SEEMS TO BE ENOUGH EVIDENCE PROVING THAT THEY DO CREATE NUTRITIONAL PROBLEMS. ONE OF WHICH ARE (ANTIBIOTIC-RESISTANT DISEASES) CANCER BECAUSE GMO’S ARE POTENTIAL TOXINS ALLERGENS, AND CARCINOGENS. OVERALL I HAVE LEARNED THAT GMO’S ARE EXTREMELY HARMFUL TO HUMANS FOR THE AMOUNT OF PROBLEMS THEY CAUSE TO HUMAN HEALTH. GMO’S ARE UNPREDICTABLE, AS THEY HAVE JUST RECENTLY BEEN IMPLEMENTED ON THE AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION OF OUR FOOD. SO, THE LONG-TERM HEALTH EFFECTS OF GMO’S CAN BE MUCH WORSE THAN WHAT WE HAVE ALREADY RECOGNIZED. THE PEOPLE OF AMERICA AND OTHER COUNTRIES WHO HAVE ADOPTED GMO’S INTO THEIR DIET CAN SUFFER IN UNIMAGINABLE WAYS. AND IT IS SUCH A PROBLEM BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE EATING GM FOODS WITHOUT EVEN KNOWING THEY ARE DOING SO. TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM WE HAVE TO EMPOWER THE PEOPLE WITH AWARENESS OF GMO’S, AND EDUCATE THEM ABOUT THIS TOPIC. INFORM THEM ABOUT POSSIBLE NON-GMO FOODS THEY COULD EAT AS A GUIDELINE FOR WHAT FOODS THEY SHOULD BUY IN THE CASE THEY WANT TO ADJUST THEIR DIET. THAN WITH THAT KNOWLEDGE IT IS THERE CHOICE WHAT THEY WILL DO TO BENEFIT THEIR HEALTH AND FUTURE.
